Cobalt drier
Physical Characteristics
Appearance Clear, middle-viscous violet liquid Metal content Co: 6.80 – 7.20 % ISO 4619 Non-volatile content NA Viscosity 200 – 980 mPa.s (20°C) ISO 3219 (A) Specific gravity NA Density 0.98 g/cm³ DIN 51757 (20 °C) Solvent Water dispersible oil Features
- Based on metal salts of neodecanoic acid (neodecanoates)
- Catalyzes redox reactions and even small additions result in the dissociation of autoxidant hydroperoxides and to a change in valency from Co2+ to Co3+
- Initiates rapid surface drying
Applications
- Oxidative systems, including:
- Architectural paints
- Industrial coatings
- Stains
- Varnishes

Dosage
In conventional alkyd formulations, the cobalt amount is in the range of 0.03 to 0.08 % metal, calculated on the solid binder. In paints and varnishes Borchers® Deca Cobalt mostly is combined with Borchers® Deca Zirconium and Octa-Soligen® Calcium 10, basic. In printing inks, a combination of Borchers® Deca Cobalt and Borchers® Deca Manganese is recommended. The cobalt amount is in the range of 0.03 to 0.05 % metal, calculated on the solid binder. Irrespective of these guidelines, the addition should always be determined in preliminary trials. In the case of Borchers® Deca Cobalt 7 aqua, suitable secondary driers are Borchers® Deca Zinc 10 aqua and Octa-Soligen® Zirconium 10 Aqua.
Storage
Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures below 50 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.
