The Best Borchi® Brand Wetting Agents & Dispersants for Various Pigment Types
October 28, 2022 | Blog
A pigment dispersion’s success is determined by understanding its color performance in paint, coating, and ink formulations. Aspects of color performance include chroma, hues, transparency, and opacity.
In order to fully understand a dispersion’s color performance, one must assess its dispersion properties. These include viscosity, particle size, and compatibility. The pigment surface wetting ability and dispersion stability of wetting agents and dispersing agents directly impact these properties.
Borchi® Gen wetting and dispersing additives were designed to enhance pigment particles’ surface tension/interaction stability. These dispersants work in various pigment types and systems. High and low molecular weight options are available.
However, there are many kinds of pigment dispersants and wetting agents to choose from. Thus, selecting the right ones for your specific pigment formulations can be challenging.
Borchi Gen dispersants are available for pigment types such as:
- Organic and carbon black pigments
- Organic blue, green, and red pigments
- Transparent iron oxide pigments
- TiO2 pigments
- Bismuth vanadate pigments
- Low molecular weight options for various pigments
- and more

High molecular weight wetting and dispersing agents are available for organic and inorganic pigments.
Dispersing additive highlights for organic and carbon black pigments
Borchi Gen 0851 is a 50% active VOC-free and APEO-free dispersant. This specialty additive is excellent for use in waterborne coating formulations with organic pigments. It provides low viscosity dispersions, good transparency, and long-term dispersion stability. Borchi Gen 0851 offers great color development in a wide range of resin systems. Furthermore, it provides high jetness in carbon black pigment formulations.
Borchi Gen 0851 for waterborne systems provides excellent color development in a variety of organic pigment grinds
Borchi Gen 0451 is a 100% active VOC- and APEO-free solution. This dispersant can be used in waterborne and solvent borne systems with organic pigments. It provides low viscosity dispersions, good transparency, and long-term dispersion stability. Borchi Gen 0451 provides high jetness in carbon black pigment formulations.
Organic blue, green, and red pigments
Borchi Gen 1051 is a 45% active organic pigment dispersant that offers low viscosity dispersions. This additive provides high transparency and long-term dispersion stability in solvent borne systems.

Dispersing additive highlights for inorganic pigments
Transparent iron oxide pigments
Borchi Gen 1750 is a VOC-free, 40% active dispersant for waterborne systems. Benefits of this additive include small pigment particle size dispersions for transparent iron oxides. Additionally, this solution could be used with titanium dioxide (TiO2). It can also be used with other inorganic pigments and fillers.
When combined with Borchi Gel PN or Borchi Gel NA zirconium complex rheology modifiers, settling is not observed. This is the case even with high concentrations of pigments and lower viscosity dispersions.
Small pigment particle sizes with Borchi Gen 1750 help achieve higher transparency in transparent iron oxide pigments
Low viscosity grinds with high pigment load with the use of Borchi Gen 1750 in transparent iron oxide pigment formulations
TiO2 and iron oxide pigments
Borchi Gen 1252 is a 100% active VOC- and APEO-free dispersant for waterborne, solvent-free, and solvent-based systems. This dispersant provides high tint strength and strong contrast ratios with TiO2 and other inorganic pigments. It also has a strong affinity to iron oxide pigments. This results in stable dispersions with excellent color development.
Over 70 % titanium dioxide and 60 % iron oxide pigment loadings are possible with free-flowing viscosities. Borchi Gen 1252 can also achieve long-term dispersion stability with Borchi Gel PN.
Borchi Gen 1252 dispersant and Borchi Gel PN rheology modifier provide low viscosity and prevent pigment settlement in TiO2 pigment formulations
Bismuth vanadate (PY 184) pigments
Borchi Gen 1757 is a 100% active pigment dispersant and wetting agent for excellent stabilization. This VOC-free additive is good with high loading in waterborne and solvent borne bismuth vanadate pigment concentrates. Using Borchi Gen 1757 produces great color and opacity.
Furthermore, formulations with Borchi Gen 1757 and Borchi Gel PN together provide a number of benefits. These include low viscosity pigment dispersions, better pigment wetting, and reduced settling. They also provide long-term stabilization of dense inorganic pigments.
