Cobalt drier for solvent-based paint systems
Physical Characteristics
Appearance Clear, middle-viscous, blue-violet liquid Metal content Co: 11.70 – 12.30 % ISO 4619 Non-volatile content 57.00 – 69.00 % ISO 3251 (2g, 3h, 105°C) Viscosity Max. 500 mPa.s (20°C) ISO 3219 (A) Specific gravity NA Density 0.980 – 1.020 g/cm³ DIN 51757 (20 °C) Solvent White-spirit containing <1 % aromatics Features
- Based on metal salts of neodecanoic acid (neodecanoates)
- Catalyzes redox reactions and even small additions result in the dissociation of autoxidant hydroperoxides and to a change in valency from Co2+ to Co3+
- Initiates rapid surface drying
Applications
- All oxidative systems, including:
- Architectural paints
- Industrial coatings
- Stains
- Varnishes
- Oil-based inks
- Artists’ oil paints
- All oxidative systems, including:
Dosage
In conventional alkyd formulations, the cobalt amount is in the range of 0.03 to 0.08 % metal, calculated on the solid binder. In paints and varnishes Borchers® Deca Cobalt mostly is combined with Borchers® Deca Zirconium and Octa-Soligen® Calcium 10, basic. In printing inks, a combination of Borchers® Deca Cobalt and Borchers® Deca Manganese is recommended. The cobalt amount is in the range of 0.03 to 0.05 % metal, calculated on the solid binder. Irrespective of these guidelines, the addition should always be determined in preliminary trials.
Storage
Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures below 50 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.
