Oxime-Free and Amine-Free Anti-Skinning Agent for Solvent-Based Alkyds

Borchi® Guard T is an oxime-free and amine-free anti-skinning agent for oxidatively cured solvent-based coating systems and pigment pastes.

 

The Problem with Oximes

While oxime-based additives have been commonly used to prevent skinning, they have faced growing regulatory concerns in recent years.

 

Methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO) levels at ≥ 0.1% require Carcinogenic 1B labeling in the European Union (EU). Canada also has a Code of Practice that limits MEKO in indoor paints.

 

2-Pentanone oxime (2PO or MPKO) is anticipated to receive receive GHS Carcinogenic 2 labeling in the EU.

 

A High-Performing, Oxime-Free Alternative

Borchi® Guard T helps formulators prevent skinning in alkyd paints while reducing impact from current and expected regulations.

 

Future-proof against both oxime and cobalt regulatory concerns by formulating Borchi® Guard T with Borchi® OXY-Coat cobalt-free high-performance catalysts for solvent-based short, medium, and long oil alkyd coatings or Borchi® Dragon high-performance cobalt-free catalysts for solvent-based high solids, long oil alkyd coatings.

 

In a solventborne long oil alkyd using Borchi® OXY-Coat, Borchi® Guard T provided 7x longer skin prevention at 33% lower dosage than a 2PO alternative.

    • Improves the storage stability of solvent-based, oxidatively cured coating systems, printing inks, and pigment pastes by preventing skin formation on the surface while the material is still in the container

  • Dosage

    Borchi® Guard T can be added to the system at any stage of the manufacturing process but it is highly recommended to add it as the final addition after driers. The amount of Borchi® Guard T depends on the type of binder and quantity of the driers used.

    Recommended dosage:  

    The recommended dosage in the finished system is typically in the range of 0.2–0.9%, depending on the binder type and the amount of driers used. 

    When Borchi® Guard T is used as a replacement for 2PO or MEKO, a dosage level of approximately 50–80% of the current 2PO or MEKO concentration should be taken as a guideline. Fine adjustment should be carried out based on the specific formulation.

  • Storage

    Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures between 5 and 30 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.
