Cobalt-Free Drier / Sustainable Solution for Improved Dry Time in Alkyd Paint
Borchi® OXY-Coat is a unique iron-based high-performance cobalt-free drier catalyst for improved drying time in paints containing alkyd resins. It demonstrates excellent drying performance at low use levels in solvent-based short, medium, and long oil alkyd paint. This solution does not require the use of an auxiliary drier. Cobalt-free driers are more sustainable drying solutions as they do not contain metals like cobalt that may face regulatory concerns in coating applications. Borchi® OXY-Coat is particularly efficient in coatings using propylene glycol.
Comparison of Borchi® OXY-Coat in Medium Oil Alkyd Paint
Borchi® OXY-Coat provides improved drying time compared to a cobalt drier in medium oil alkyd paint. This oxidative curing catalyst also works well in short and long oil alkyd systems
How does alkyd paint dry?
Coatings typically need a metal catalyst to achieve the best dry times. As a high-performance metal-based catalyst, Borchi® OXY-Coat is applicable in a wide range of alkyd coating systems that dry oxidatively.
Benefits of High-Performance Cobalt-Free Driers
Cobalt-free paint driers are ideal long-term solutions for formulators looking to meet potential regulations surrounding cobalt in coating applications. For example, in June 2022, the U.S. EPA prioritized Cobalt and Cobalt Compounds for risk assessment and possible regulatory reclassification.
Performance benefits of Borchi® OXY-Coat include improved drying time, gloss, and haze in alkyd-based paint. This solution also provides brighter whites and reduces yellowing in coatings. Adhesion is improved in direct-to-metal applications with the use of this product. Borchi® OXY-Coat also eliminates or reduces the need for anti-skinning agents.
Borchi® OXY-Coat works well for exterior coatings used in adverse weather conditions. This extends the coatings season window for paint applications. It provides wrinkle-free drying in hot weather and faster drying in cold weather.
Non-Yellowing of Alkyds Over Time
Cobalt Drier Borchi® OXY-Coat
Color advantages include brighter whites in coatings compared to cobalt and other metal carboxylates
Manganese Drier Borchi® OXY-Coat
Yellower Wood Tones Warmer Wood Tones
Borchi® OXY-Coat provides warmer wood tones compared to traditional manganese driers
Borchi® OXY-Coat Advantage Under Adverse
(10ºC / 80% RH) Conditions in Different Systems
Compared to cobalt carboxylate driers, cobalt-free paint driers allow for the use of exterior coatings in adverse conditions. They provide improved dry times in low temperature, high humidity weather
Wrinkling Prevention on Substrates
Cobalt Drier Borchi® OXY-Coat
Unlike cobalt alternatives, Borchi® OXY-Coat prevents wrinkling, creating a smooth appearance
Through Dry Time of SB Pigmented Direct to Metal Applications
Cobalt replacement driers are better than cobalt driers in direct to metal applications when used in standard and adverse conditions
Control Borchi® OXY-Coat
Borchi® OXY-Coat reduces or eliminates the need for anti-skinning agents in coatings
Similar Cobalt-Free Driers
While Borchi® OXY-Coat can work in water- and solvent-based systems, it tends to work best in solvent-based alkyd systems. Borchi® OXY-Coat 1101 is ideal for water-based alkyd coatings. Borchi® Dragon is designed for use in high solids alkyds.
Applications
Ideal applications for Borchi® OXY-Coat include wood, industrial, and architectural coatings, as well as printing inks.

- Improves drying activity, color performance, gloss and haze compared to cobalt-based driers in alkyd paints
- Brighter whites and non-yellowing in coatings
- Based on a unique, patented, highly active iron complex
- Primarily recommended for use in solvent-based systems
- Can be used in all coatings which dry by oxidation
Applications
- Coatings with resins that that dry by oxidation
- Alkyds
- Vegetable oils
- Epoxy esters
- Polybutadiene
- Others
Dosage
All resin systems are unique and will require the level of Borchi® OXY - Coat to be optimized for the best cost and dry. We recommend using a ladder study of 0.5 -3 % Borchi® OXY - Coat as supplied on resin solids. Please keep in mind that too much Borchi® OXY – Coat might inhibit through dry. Borchi® OXY - Coat should be added as one of the last ingredients before the Anti-Skinning agent.
Storage
Protect from the effects of weathering and store at temperatures between 5 and 30 °C. Once opened, containers should be resealed immediately after each removal of the product.
